Ticks are Surging Now!

Unfortunately, Nassau and Suffolk counties are currently experiencing an explosion of Deer ticks, Lone Star, and American dog ticks. In fact, the populations of these ticks have increased by 30-40% over the last year, read more, and experts are rating the outdoor risk as a full 10/10.

New Health Threats

In Suffolk County, Lyme disease cases have exponentially increased year over year. But a new health threat, Alpha Gal syndrome, caused by Lone Star ticks, is on the rise. Nationally, cases are approaching 500,000, and Long Island is a hot spot

To make matters worse, the past year has seen an increase in other tick-borne illnesses, including Ehrlichiosis, Babesia, Powassan virus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Uptick in Bites in Suffolk County

We are in the hot zone, characterized by our tall beach grass, a thriving deer population, and woody areas. Local doctors have seen an increase in bites and offer some tips on how to prevent being bitten.

Mosquitos are Deadly

Another scourge on Eastern Long Island is the dreaded mosquito. They tend to swarm in marsh-adjacent towns, such as East Hampton, and bites can range from annoying to severe allergic reactions, leading to facial swelling and more severe consequences.
Suffolk County Vector Control conducts controversial aerial pesticide sprays with minimal impact. Truly, the safest and most effective way to control ticks and mosquitoes is to have HamptonTick.com come to your property and eliminate the problem. Each property is different, so a “one size fits all” doesn’t work. We are the most affordable and effective treatment against ticks and mosquitoes.

Last year, West Nile Virus was detected in Long Island mosquitoes, though no human cases have been reported yet this season. Eastern Equine Encephalitis hasn’t reappeared in humans since a 2024 case but remains on the radar. The Department of Health says that the disease, also known as “EEE,” is a “rare but serious and often fatal infection that causes encephalitis or inflammation of the brain.” Like West Nile Virus, EEE is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. People over the age of 50 and younger than the age of 15 are at the highest risk for developing severe disease when infected with EEEV.

What Should You Do?

Tick populations are far worse than usual, and mosquitoes are more aggressive, which translates to elevated disease risks, including Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, EEE, and others.
